What is small magic?

A monthly-ish newsletter about writing, creating, recovering, & existing. (You know. The little things.)

Who are you?

I’m Kate Horowitz, a poet, essayist, science writer, & sea witch in Maine. I’m autistic & disabled & nonbinary & queer & I have a lot of feelings about Addams Family Values. & bioluminescence. & the moon. I have a lot of feelings in general.

Who should subscribe?

You should, if you like any or all of the following:

  • memoir

  • science writing

  • love letters to movie monsters

  • weird creative nonfiction about bats

  • reported essays on illness & disability

  • sentimental poems about marine invertebrates

  • huggy, supportive, witchy self-help

  • snack recommendations

  • writing prompts

  • bad drawings

  • lists

  • me

Do I have to pay for this?

No. Never—unless you want to. Some readers choose to pay for supporter subscriptions because they can afford to and because they find my writing and this newsletter personally meaningful. For everyone else, this newsletter is free, and it always will be.

For 2024…

  • free subscriptions are $0.000000.

  • monthly supporter subscriptions are $5.50 per month.

  • annual supporter subscriptions are $55.00 per year.

  • founder subscriptions, for those who really want to make a point, are $88.00 per year.

  • tipping in the form of worm drawings is strongly encouraged.

NOTE: Substack might occasionally try to nudge you into becoming a paid subscriber. I can’t turn that function off. If that’s not your jam, you can completely ignore it.

Hang on. Did you say “snack recommendations”?

Yes. I’m very good at snacks.

…and the worms?

Worms are fun to draw! Don’t overthink it.
