This was so beautiful, Kate. We have those beach roses in West Seattle too and am I entirely obsessed with them.

They're great! So brazen and sloppy! And oh, that scent.

I might need to track down this soap... and hah, brazen and sloppy! I always think of roses as somehow polite, but these have a case otherwise.

I love your mini essay, Kate! I know that feeling, and reading about your experiences with it made me feel it again. Like a meta-experience. I also know now that the roses in the dunes in front of my house are actually Rosa rugosa, and not Rosa canina as I previously thought :)

Thank you so much for saying you felt it, too! Sometimes when I write about emotional phenomena I wonder if I'm mistakenly assuming that my personal experience is universal. Glad to be right about this one. :) <3

Yes please, more like it. I live on an island in the Pacific Northwest. If I didn't live here, I'd probably be in Maine. We have beach roses here too. Apparently they are invasive in the US. But then, aren't we all?

Thank you, John! Yes, I was reading about how quickly and ravenously the beach roses spread. That's certainly in evidence around here. Great for me, and probably less wonderful for other plants.
